Chapter 18
Proof
Tails plows down to the ground, and snow whips back all around. Eddy, the gang, and I shield our faces, but our hair and chains belt in the wind. The snow thrashes against me, knocking me back. I trip over my own tail, but just as Iâm about to fall, Eddy pulls me back and into his chest.
His back takes the brunt of the white whipping. I peer up into his closed eyes as he grunts, and then I notice the blood seeping from his wound. Without thinking, I wrap my arms around his waist, clasp my hands, and spin us around. The snow beats against my back now.
I grit my teeth.
âSlixx,â he whispers under me.
âCanât say I never saved you!â
âWoof!â
I barely lift my head before a bulldozer rams into me and Eddy. We both fly up into the air, but soft fur breaks our fall. Sitting atop Tails, I look down at his golden coat, unable to stop smiling. I bend over to hug him, but he jumps back as a lash of snow hurls our way. I topple over like a ragdoll.
âSheets!â Leon lunges over and grabs my arm. He holds onto Tailsâ fur with one hand and yanks me up with the other. âMust I save everyone around here?â
Another lashing of snow hurls up from the east, but before it rains down on us, I catch sight of the perpetratorâs thin green eyesâthe black feline. Using its paws, it chucks up snow from a distance. More lashes blast at us as white blinds my vision. I hang onto Tailsâ fur along with Eddy and Leon, and upon looking over a bit more, I see the rest of the gang hanging on near Tailsâ tail, relentless with their kegs still on their backs.
âHow do we get outta here?â Eddy cries out.
âGood question, Flicky!â Kaplone shouts, hanging on to his hat.
Tails stampers back as the snow finally starts to settle.
âBut like I told yuh before, ainât no way out!â
Sliding off his straps, Leon unexpectantly kicks his keg overboard. The other gang members gasp his name, but he points straight ahead. His raspy voice comes out deeper than an alto. âEither drop your kegs or plan on taking a trip to holding because those are your only two options!â
The gang members stare at him in awe for a moment, but then they reluctantly take off their kegs and push them to the groundâeven Kaplone who watches his plunge to the snow.
Tracing Leonâs raised hand, I fight the urge to recoil at the sight.
Not only do all the animals and gunmen surround us like before, but now a giant spiderweb entraps us. Thick silk weaves from the ground up to the foggy sky, and multiple layers overlay one another. The dark black spider with a broad back peers at us at the forefront of the enemyâs round line. It begins to creep closer along with the hissing snakes, yellow venom dripping from their fangs.
At the center of the chaos, Tails takes a step back but has nowhere to go.
